Refactoring for Workshop GDG

This MR collects changes for the move from GitLab.com to Workshop.

  • Some commenting for clarity
  • Pinning to a stable Alpine release for goodness and also since :latest seems to break multiple aspects of the build
  • Switching to curl for better behavior with the egress proxy
  • Removing some cruft
